PRESIDENT: PROSECUTOR GENERAL’S OFFICE MUST COMPLETE CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST PERPETRATORS OF MAIDAN MURDERS

Punishment of perpetrators of Maidan murders is the main task for the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine, President Petro Poroshenko noted in Verkhovna Rada in the course of the introduction of the candidacy of Viktor Shokin to the post of Prosecutor General. casinoin.

“It is a test that should be passed not only by you and the Prosecutor General’s Office, but also by the entire country. I am confident that it is another vaccination for the government not to use its forceful resource for the struggle against democracy,” the President addressed the nominee.

The President has also called for the completion of the rest of cases “using the opportunities legally provided for the trial in absentia of Yanukovych and his organized criminal groups”.

318 deputies voted for the approval of the candidacy of Viktor Shokin at the post of Prosecutor General. Before that, 291 votes approved the resignation of Vitaliy Yarema from the given post.

Commenting on the request for resignation of Vitaliy Yarema, Petro Poroshenko has noted that such a decision was an evidence of new political culture in Ukraine and deserved respect. It has become a consequence of broad political discussion about the work of the Prosecutor General’s Office. “Unhealed wound of Maidan still hurts. I believe and can join the aspirations of people that those who committed crimes on Maidan and those involved in corrupt schemes should be immediately brought to justice. It is a task for all law enforcement bodies: Prosecutor General’s Office, Ministry of the Interior, Security Service of Ukraine and future Anti-Corruption Bureau,” the Head of State has noted.

Petro Poroshenko is hopeful that staffing changes will be implemented within the entire vertical of public prosecution after the appointment of the new Prosecutor General. “I will not object the involvement of foreign experts in the work of the Prosecutor General’s Office,” the Head of State said.

At the same time he noted that changes in the Prosecutor General’s Office must be not only staffing, but also systemic.

Setting a task for the new Prosecutor General, the President has emphasized that “each crime should be punished and investigation and bringing to justice should be inevitable”. According to him, the results of efficient work of the public prosecution are often being eliminated by “unreformed judicial system”. Petro Poroshenko has urged the deputies of Verkhovna Rada to adopt the Law on Judicial Reform without a delay.
